Svaneti is one of the most beautiful and authentic regions of Georgia. It contains the most dramatic walks in the Caucasus, routes vary from easy to difficult and is a real discovery for trekkers, climbers and simply nature lowers. During walks you are crossing forests and fields full with flowers, on the background you have permanently white and huge peaks (many over 4500 meters) and 11th-13th century stone towers are looking up from the valleys below. Besides delightful nature Svaneti is famous for its culture, here you will find many small churches with superb 12th century mural paintings and icons, museums are also famous for its collections.

Trekking in Svaneti

Day 1: Depart for Tbilisi
Day 2: Tbilisi
Early arrival at the airport, meet and transfer to a hotel. After breakfast city sightseeing tour. Founded on a mixed eastern and western cultures Tbilisi will undoubtedly enchant any visitor. Narrow streets of Old Tbilisi will be here your companion to the picturesque districts, early Christian churches and the bath district where the city history starts. And panoramic view from Narikhala fortress overlooking all the districts of the city will simply increase your admiration. Overnight in Tbilisi.
Day 3: Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Kutaisi
In the morning we drive to the ancient capital of Georgia – Mtskheta. Here we will visit Jvari monastery (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli cathedral which houses the robe of Christ (11th century). They are both UNESCO World heritage sights. Afterwards continue our way to west to visit the city of Kutaisi. The legendary story of the Golden Fleece is connected with Kutaisi. Overnight in Kutaisi.
Day 4: Kutaisi – Mestia
We continue exploring UNESCO world heritage sites. In the morning we visit Gelati monastery (12th century) which had been the cultural and educational centre of Georgia over many centuries. In middle ages it was not less than the academies of Athens and Jerusalem. Then we drive to Zugdidi and change transport to 4WD and continue our way to Mestia. In the village Lenjeri we will visit small church that houses incredible 12th century mural painting; the exterior of the church is also decorated by 14th century wall painting. Day 5: Mestia – Village Mulakhi – Mestia
In the morning we drive to the village Mulakhi and start our walk to Mestia. After little uphill we descend to the beautiful valley full with flowers (especially in spring) and have a view of Chalaadi glacier (2300 m) and Mestia valley with its watchtowers. After returning in Mestia we visit Historical – Ethnographic museum.
Walking time: 5 hrs. Up: 150m., down: 400m
Day 6: Mestia – Ushguli
Today we visit village Ushguli, it is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The village is located at 2200 m. and is highest continuously inhabited village in Europe. Here you will see how the nature, architecture and old traditions can merge into each other. We will visit Lamaria church (12th century) and walk to Queen Tamar’s tower. In the evening we can walk around in the village and get familiar with the daily life of the village. Overnight in Ushguli.
Walking time: 2 hrs. Up & down: 250m
Day 7: Ushguli – Mestia
We start our walk that takes us to the base of Georgia’s highest mountain, Shkhara (5068 m) and rich the tongue of the glacier. This is the place where main river of Svaneti – Enguri takes source. After returning back to Ushguli we drive back to Mestia. Overnight in Mestia.
Walking time: 5 hrs. Up & down: 300m
Day 8: Mestia – Mt. Zuruldi (2500 m) – Becho
In the morning we depart towards Mt. Zuruldi, after some drive we start our walk to Mt. Zuruldi (2500 m). From the top of the mountain we will have amazing view of Caucasus Mountains Mt. Elbrus (5642 m), Mt. Shkhara (5068 m), Mt. Tetnuldi (4617 m), Mt. Ushba (4700 m), Mt. Shkhelda (3800 m). From Mt. Zuruldi we drive to the village Becho. Next 2 vernights in Becho.
Walking time: 7-8 hrs. Up & down: 1200m.
Day 9: Becho – Ushba – Becho
Today we drive to the village Mazeri and Shikhra and start our morning trekking. Our aim is to get closer to Mt. Ushba (4700 m) that overlooks proudly on Svaneti. After crossing deep forest, we continue to the waterfalls. The beauty of waterfalls and twin picked Mt. Ushba (4700 m.) will make you feel like a character of a fairy tail.
Walking time: 7-8 hrs., 1st waterfall – Up & down: 900m
Walking time: 8-9 hrs., 2nd waterfall – Up & down: 1000m
Walking time: 9-10 hrs., Glacier – Up & down: 1200m.
Day 10: Becho – Kutaisi
In the morning we drive to Kutaisi. En route visit Enguri hydro power station. In Kutaisi we will visit traditional farmers market. At the end of the day we will visit Bagrati cathedral (11th century) which represents the unity of Georgia and is UNESCO world heritage site. Overnight in Kutaisi.
Day 11: Kutaisi – Tbilisi
In the morning drive back to Tbilisi and have a chance to explore city on your own.
