Which is colder, Batumi or Tbilisi?

Batumi is the second biggest city in Georgia, located on the Black Sea coast, so the temperature feels different compared to Tbilisi. Overall, Batumi is warmer than Tbilisi in winter. However, on rainy days when the humidity is high, Batumi can feel colder even though the actual temperature is usually higher than in Tbilisi.

Most snow in Georgia falls in the mountainous regions. For example, the first snow in 2025 appeared in Svaneti on September 21, and around the same time in Kazbegi. Tusheti’s road usually closes at the beginning of October due to snow, making the area accessible only by helicopter until the road reopens in mid-June.

Which one is better, Gudauri or Bakuriani?

You really can’t say which one is better. It depends on what kind of winter holiday you want. Both Gudauri and Bakuriani are great, but they offer different experiences.

Gudauri

Gudauri is the main ski area of Georgia and is perfect for people who want a more active winter holiday. It is located at about 2200 meters and offers a very open, wide mountain landscape with great snow quality. The resort has 14 lifts, many long slopes for all levels and a very relaxed skiing atmosphere.

Gudauri is also popular for extra activities like paragliding, freeriding, heli-skiing and a snow park. The hotels, restaurants, bars and spas give it a lively and social feel, especially in the evenings. It is connected to Kobi by a panoramic lift, and from there you can easily reach Stepantsminda, one of the most beautiful small towns in the region. Gudauri was originally developed with Austrian expertise and still keeps a modern and comfortable standard. Its close location to Tbilisi also makes it great for short ski trips.

When to visit Gudauri and Bakuriani?

The best time to visit both Gudauri and Bakuriani is from mid-December to late March, when the snow is at its best.
January and February are the peak months for strong snow and the most reliable skiing conditions in both resorts.

Old Tbilisi is also the place where Asia and Europe meet, creating a unique blend of cultures, architecture, and traditions that you can feel at every step, and since every corner hides something interesting, here are a few highlights you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Highlights of Old Tbilisi:

Liberty Square – Start here at the main square connecting old and new Tbilisi. It is a lively spot where many events take place.

Meidan Bazaar – From Liberty Square, head underground to this market where you can buy souvenirs, local wine, and handmade items. It shows the old trading spirit of the city.

Sioni Cathedral – A short walk from the bazaar, this historic church is full of beautiful icons and is an important spiritual site for locals.

The Great Synagogue of Tbilisi – built in the early 20th century by Georgian Jews from Akhaltsikhe. It’s on Kote Afkhazi Street, right in the old town.

5. Bridge of Peace

You can’t miss the Bridge of Peace when visiting Tbilisi. It stretches across the Mtkvari River, between Metekhi and Baratashvili bridges, and connects Erekle II Street with Rikhe Park. The bridge officially opened in May 2010. It was designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, while the lighting design was created by Philippe Martineau.

The bridge has a modern and eye-catching style. It is built with a steel frame and glass panels, resting on four large pillars. With a length of 156 meters, it looks especially magical at night when thousands of LED lights shine brightly, creating beautiful reflections on the water.

6. Funicular and Cable car rides

One of the best ways to see Tbilisi from above is by taking the funicular or the cable car. Both rides give you a unique view of the city, the river, and the surrounding hills, making them a highlight for any visitor.

The funicular takes you up Mtatsminda Mountain, where you will find Mtatsminda Park, restaurants, and walking paths. The ride is smooth and fun, and once you reach the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and relax in the park. It’s a perfect combination of transport and sightseeing.

The project was created by Georgian architects Otar Kalandarishvili and Gizo Potskhishvili. Their inspiration came from the mountain village of Shatili, where bridges and passages linked medieval stone towers. In Shatili, these connections made the village safer during attacks. The architects brought the same idea to modern Tbilisi, giving the buildings a fortress-like design.

The bridge itself is very special. It starts on the 14th floor of the first block, continues to the 12th floor of the second block, and ends at the 10th floor of the third block. For many residents, it’s not just an architectural curiosity; it’s part of daily life. People use the bridge to cross between buildings and then take the elevator down, instead of climbing up and down the steep hill. This makes moving around the area much easier.

Another striking feature is the horseshoe-shaped balconies, which come from traditional designs in Georgia’s mountain regions and symbolize good fortune.

9. Tbilisi Botanical Garden

The monument was created by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli in the 1980s. Although it was never fully finished, it still tells the story of Georgia’s history through giant stone pillars decorated with kings, queens, and important events.

 You can reach the monument in about 20 minutes by taxi or car from the city center. Since it is located above the city and close to the sea, the area feels calm and refreshing. Many visitors also enjoy combining the trip with a short walk by the Tbilisi Sea.

Buying souvenirs is one of the most popular activities while traveling, but think twice before you buy them.

When visiting Georgia, it’s tempting to take a piece of this lovely country with you. Flea markets and roadside sellers often offer unique items, but some of these souvenirs come with a hidden cost, Georgia’s environment, heritage, and culture. 

What are illegal souvenirs?

Some items sold as souvenirs are illegal to buy to sell, or export from Georgia. There include:

• Bear pelt
• Fox hide
• Wolf hide
• Horns of Caucasian ibex
• Horn of Alpine chamois
• Any type of taxidermy trophy
• Fragment of stalactites and stalagmites
• Seeds of plants facing the threat of extinction
• Coins, paintings, jewels, inscriptions and armor with cultural heritage significance
• Any stolen art items

They may look like rare gems, but they are often gathered by illegal hunting, theft, poaching or destruction of natural and historical sites.

Why not to buy them?

-You would be supporting animal cruelty. Wildlife products, such as, hides, horns, or taxidermy, are often the result of illegal hunting. This results in the decline of vulnerable species and disrupts Georgia’s fragile ecosystem.

– You would be damaging natural heritage. Breaking off a piece of a stalactite might feel like taking a tiny piece of a cave home, but these natural formations take thousands of years to grow and are protected by law.

– You may be fueling plant extinction. Some sellers offer seeds of rare plants. Removing them from their natural habitat contributes to ecological imbalance.

– You would be trafficking cultural artifacts. Purchasing an antique coin, painting, or armor without official documentation could be an act of cultural theft. These items are part of Georgia’s heritage and protected by law.

What can you get instead?

You can always buy locally made crafts like traditional ceramics, textiles, felt, or enamel from various different places. Go for nature-friendly products like jams, teas, and honey. You can support a sustainable business that respects both the environment and culture.

Spotting The Caucasian Five is challenging. However, Chances are higher in Spring from late April to Early May.

Semi-deserts like Vashlovani Nature Reserve and David Gareji are heaven for bird lovers as the place is famous for Demoiselle Cranes, Sylvia, Falcons, Snake-Eating Eagles, and Imperial Eagles.

Is Georgia tourist-friendly? What’s the attitude towards foreign visitors?

In general, tap water is safe to drink throughout the country. However, it may contain different minerals than you are accustomed to. It is best to start with bottled water and gradually transition to tap water in small doses.

Nightlife safety in Georgia

Cafe bars are a big part of Georgian nightlife and are generally safe. However, you need to take precautions as you would elsewhere, such as never letting your drink out of sight and going out in groups.

Tbilisi and Batumi have the best nightlife options, as they are the biggest cities in Georgia. However, it’s best to avoid “gentlemen’s clubs”. Some of these venues are infamous for overcharging tourists for drinks or services and threatening those who refuse to pay.

The good news is that police are actively cracking down on these scams, and during 2022 and 2023, several individuals were charged.

In general, stick to bars and clubs that have numerous positive reviews. If you have a local guide, ask them for recommendations as well.

What About Political Unrest? Does It Make Georgia Dangerous to Visit?

Georgia is one of the safest countries in Europe, but whenever it appears in Western media, it may not seem that way. This is mainly due to the fact that about 20% of the country is occupied by Russia. Two regions, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (also known as Samachablo), have been under Russian control since the 1990s, following a war with Russia in 2008. As long as you avoid travelling to these occupied regions, you are unlikely to encounter any danger.

Another factor to consider is the protests that take place in Tbilisi, especially during the summer and often following elections. Since November 2024, there have been ongoing demonstrations in front of the Parliament in Georgia, sparked by the parliamentary elections held in October. While the initial days of the protests were marked by violence, the gatherings have generally been peaceful since then. Most protests occur at night when groups of young demonstrators gather in front of the Parliament and block Rustaveli Avenue.

All cafes, restaurants, galleries, and museums on Rustaveli Avenue are open, and there is no danger in visiting them during the daytime. Georgian protesters are peaceful; there is no violence or vandalism as might occur in some countries during political unrest.

As a visitor, the primary safety consideration is to avoid the protest areas at night. Specifically, it’s advisable not to walk down Rustaveli Avenue near Parliament after dark.

Using taxis in Georgia

Taxis can be a major concern for tourists. For foreigners who are not familiar with the local language and may struggle to communicate with drivers (as not all of them speak English), it is advisable to use a taxi from a reputable company. While there is no Uber in Georgia, services like Bolt, Yandex, and Maxim are available. Among these, Bolt has the best reputation. You can use their app, which eliminates any language barriers and confusion regarding directions or pricing.

If you decide to hail a taxi from the street, make sure to ask for the fare to your destination in advance to avoid being overcharged. Keep in mind that drivers can be quite talkative; even if they don’t speak your language well, they will often try to engage you in conversation on various topics.

Is Georgia a Safe Country for the 2SLGBTQI+ Community and Travelers

Georgia is one of the few former Soviet countries that has enacted comprehensive anti-discrimination laws, including those against hate speech and hate crimes related to sexual orientation, as well as laws addressing discrimination based on gender identity. However, Georgia is not widely regarded as a particularly gay-friendly destination. This perception is largely due to the strong influence of the conservative Orthodox Church throughout the country.

Attitudes toward the 2SLGBTQI+ community can vary significantly in Georgia, and identifying as 2SLGBTQI+ does not necessarily mean that tourists will encounter problems. After a day in a vineyard, people gather around Supra – a Traditional Georgian Feast. Tables are piled high with mouthwatering Georgian treats like freshly baked bread Shoti, Guda cheese, sunkissed tomatoes, khachapuri, mtsvadi, and churchkhela, along with plenty of homemade wine and local brandy. The tamada, or toastmaster, will lead the toasts while the celebration continues with songs, dances, and endless laughter. It’s a simple and perfect way to enjoy and celebrate life in all its colours.

The two-day festival ends with an outdoor concert and fireworks organized by local Tbilissians. The festivities carry on into the evening with live music, dance parties, and cultural performances at various venues across the city until dawn.

Gurjaani wine festival

Where:  Gurjaani, Georgia

Every October, a celebration occurs in the small town of Gurjaani, located in the main wine-making region of Kakheti, Georgia. Visitors can enjoy a variety of local wines, try delicious local delicacies, and explore traditional crafts. The presence of Georgian folk music makes this experience even more enjoyable. Local musicians perform centuries-old polyphonic songs that will delight your ears.

Zero – Compromise-Natural Wine Festival

Zero Compromise is a natural wine festival held in early May in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. This two-day event is organized by the Georgian Natural Wine Association. Local wineries that are members of this association and international wineries producing natural and qvevri wines participate in the festival. Winemakers offer a selection of simple natural wines and engage in interesting discussions about recent harvests and the production of natural wine in Georgia.

New Wine Festival

When: 2nd Saturday in May

Where: Tbilisi

The new wine festival begins with the qvevri opening ceremony and features the famous Georgian feasting song “Mravaljamieri,” which means “long live.” This popular annual festival gathers winemakers, wine experts, sommeliers, wine writers, and importers from around the world. Its main goal is to promote traditional Georgian qvevri wine, explore new varieties and regions, enhance wine education, and develop consumer culture.

Visitors can sample the best wines from various wineries, increase their knowledge about Georgian wine, and enjoy the festival’s relaxing atmosphere. There will be good music, a range of enjoyable activities planned by the organizers, and even a chance to win 10 boxes of premium wine in a contest.

Gemo Fest

This two-day food festival is organized by the Georgian Tourism Administration. The festival aims to highlight the diversity of Georgian cuisine, showcasing unique dishes from each region of Georgia. It travels from one region to another, giving home cooks, professional chefs, and winemakers an opportunity to present their culinary creations and regional specialties.

Gemo Fest attracts not only many foreigners but also many locals. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience how Georgians celebrate their food and wine, enjoy delightful music, and savour delicious Georgian dishes with the local community.

Tushetian Cheese festival

Georgians have a deep appreciation for cheese, often considering freshly baked bread and cheese enough for a satisfying meal. With around 60 varieties, cheese production is a point of pride, especially in the Tusheti region. Notable cheeses include Tushetian Guda, made from sheep or a mix of sheep and cow’s milk and ripened in a sheep-skin bag, and Dambal Khacho, a blue cheese similar to fondue. Cheese lovers should visit the Tushetian cheese festival, where local cheese-makers showcase their creations, along with folk music, handmade crafts, and sports activities like horse racing. Georgian honey festival

Honey is a treasured product in Georgia, with a cultivation history of over 5,500 years. The country’s rich floral biodiversity leads to many varieties, including Alpine, acacia, citrus, and chestnut honey. Beyond being a food item, honey is used in medicine, cosmetics, and spirits distillation. Throughout the country, you’ll find stalls and shops selling Georgian honey. Don’t miss the honey festival, a two-day event where local beekeepers showcase various honey products and share their knowledge about honey production.

The Art Gen Folk Festival

The Art-Gene Festival is Georgia’s premier folklore festival, offering an engaging cultural experience and promoting Georgian traditions among youth. Each year features a unique theme reflecting different aspects of Georgian culture, such as “Family Folklore and Polyphonic Songs” and “Georgian Ecology and Bioproducts.” Regional outdoor celebrations take place near historical monuments, culminating at the Open Air Museum of Ethnography in Tbilisi. The festival showcases a vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts, and cuisine, bridging rural and urban artists.

The Black Sea Jazz Festival

Batumi is a vibrant celebration of jazz music in various forms, blending classical elements with a coastal atmosphere. The festival has hosted renowned artists like Lisa Stansfield, Macy Gray, Hugh Masekela, and Lauryn Hill. Jazz has been popular in Georgia since the 1930s, and today, fans enjoy a range of styles including soul, blues, and R&B. Attending the festival offers a unique opportunity to experience this musical celebration in the beautiful seaside city of Batumi.

Mestia is one of the winners of the “Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO” project of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. It is worth noting that Mestia was selected among more than 130 destination applications from 57 member countries of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, which is a great achievement.

Georgia’s Culinary Delights

When visiting a new country, trying the local food is usually high on the agenda with Georgian food being no different. From Khinkali to Kachapuri to even a assorted Pkhali there is endless choices to try and devour!

1. One and only Khinkali

2. Pkhali

Pkhali refers to a family of Georgian appetizers made with any type of cooked vegetable mixed with ground walnuts, garlic, herbs, and spices. Commonly served at local restaurants, it’s like a type of cold vegetable pate or spread that’s traditionally eaten with Georgian griddled corn cakes called mchadi.

Pkhali can be made with different types of vegetables like spinach, beetroot, white beans, cabbage, eggplant, carrots, or squash. They take the color of whatever vegetable they’re made with so they can range in appearance from a pale orange to a deep green to an intense purple. Typically shaped into balls, they’re often garnished with pomegranate seeds and served as the first course at supras.

3.Khachapuri

Kachapuri is one of the most beloved Georgian foods. Like Khinkali, it’s a popular comfort food and widely considered to be our national dish.

Khachapuri refers to a traditional Georgian dish consisting of cheese-filled bread. The bread can be shaped in various ways, typically with the cheese in the middle and a surrounding crust that can be broken off and dipped into the cheese. Aside from a specialized Khachapuri cheese, the filling can contain eggs and other ingredients as well.

This beloved cheese bread is widely available throughout this region, both at Georgian restaurants and as street food. It exists in many shapes and variations.

4. Ajapsandali

Ajapsandali refers to a traditional Georgian vegetable dish made with different stewed vegetables like eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, green peppers, and bell peppers. They’re stewed till tender with seasonings like garlic, dry coriander, ground red pepper, black pepper, and salt.

Ajapsandali is typically consumed as part of a Georgian family meal. You can think of it as our version of ratatouille.

5. Lobio&Mchadi

Lobio refers to a popular Georgian bean soup or stew made with kidney beans. It exists in many varieties and can be prepared with cooked or stewed beans flavored with herbs and spices like coriander, garlic, onions, bay leaves, and blue fenugreek. Depending on the version, it can be served hot or cold and is typically eaten with mchadi or traditional  cornbread.

One of the most common types of lobio in Georgia is a cold version called lobio nigozit (bean with walnut). It’s typically made with cooked red kidney beans that are mashed with garlic, onions, walnuts, coriander, chili pepper, marigold petals, and vinegar. Hot versions of lobio may contain meat and are often served in a clay pot with mchadi.
