Tbilisi isn’t particularly famous for snow, as it’s more of a rarity here. Still, you can never say never. Sometimes, when the temperature drops below zero in the evening, you might look out your window and see snowflakes falling under the yellow streetlights. It’s a magical sight that makes you hope it continues until morning, so you can wake up to a snowy city.

When it snows at night, people often go outside to enjoy the winter vibes, throwing snowballs, building snowmen, and walking through the quiet, snow-covered streets. There’s no exact time to predict snowfall in Tbilisi, but it usually happens in late December or early January. Occasionally, it even snows in March, which always feels like a pleasant surprise.

Even if you don’t get the chance to experience snow, Tbilisi still feels magical in winter. The city is famous for its beautiful New Year lights, the streets shine with festive decorations, cozy Christmas markets and a cheerful holiday spirit everywhere you go. You can enjoy open-air concerts and the grand New Year’s tree lighting ceremony, which fills the city with joy and excitement.

Winters in Tbilisi are usually mild, so you can comfortably wander through the streets, take in the glowing atmosphere, and warm up with a cup of hot tea or mulled wine in one of the city’s many cozy cafés. If you want to see some snow nearby, you can head to the Kojori forest, where it sometimes snows during the colder weeks.

Most snow in Georgia falls in the mountainous regions. For example, the first snow in 2025 appeared in Svaneti on September 21, and around the same time in Kazbegi. Tusheti’s road usually closes at the beginning of October due to snow, making the area accessible only by helicopter until the road reopens in mid-June.

For those who want to enjoy snow without the travel challenges, Georgia has four main ski resorts: Gudauri, Bakuriani, Svaneti, and Goderdzi. These resorts are perfect for winter sports, snow activities, and simply enjoying the snowy landscapes. Even if you’re not skiing, you can experience the snowy scenery, cozy mountain villages, and winter festivals in these areas.

It sits at around 1700 meters and is known as a very family-friendly winter destination. Besides skiing, you have parks, restaurants, an ice rink and even night skiing on the Didveli slope.

Bakuriani has 12 ski lifts, 33 kilometers of slopes and three ski areas: Didveli, Kokhta and Mitarbi. It also hosted the 2023 World Championships, which really improved its reputation internationally. The infrastructure is modern and the resort can make extra snow when natural snowfall is low, so the ski season usually runs well from December to March. The evergreen forests around the resort make the whole area very cozy and beautiful.

The resort has 14 lifts, many long slopes for all levels and a very relaxed skiing atmosphere.

Gudauri is also popular for extra activities like paragliding, freeriding, heli-skiing and a snow park. The hotels, restaurants, bars and spas give it a lively and social feel, especially in the evenings. It is connected to Kobi by a panoramic lift, and from there you can easily reach Stepantsminda, one of the most beautiful small towns in the region.

The project was created by Georgian architects Otar Kalandarishvili and Gizo Potskhishvili. Their inspiration came from the mountain village of Shatili, where bridges and passages linked medieval stone towers. In Shatili, these connections made the village safer during attacks. The architects brought the same idea to modern Tbilisi, giving the buildings a fortress-like design.

The bridge itself is very special. It starts on the 14th floor of the first block, continues to the 12th floor of the second block, and ends at the 10th floor of the third block. For many residents, it’s not just an architectural curiosity; it’s part of daily life. People use the bridge to cross between buildings and then take the elevator down, instead of climbing up and down the steep hill. This makes moving around the area much easier.

Another striking feature is the horseshoe-shaped balconies, which come from traditional designs in Georgia’s mountain regions and symbolize good fortune.

What About Political Unrest? Does It Make Georgia Dangerous to Visit?

Georgia is one of the safest countries in Europe, but whenever it appears in Western media, it may not seem that way. This is mainly due to the fact that about 20% of the country is occupied by Russia. Two regions, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (also known as Samachablo), have been under Russian control since the 1990s, following a war with Russia in 2008. As long as you avoid travelling to these occupied regions, you are unlikely to encounter any danger.

Another factor to consider is the protests that take place in Tbilisi, especially during the summer and often following elections. Since November 2024, there have been ongoing demonstrations in front of the Parliament in Georgia, sparked by the parliamentary elections held in October. While the initial days of the protests were marked by violence, the gatherings have generally been peaceful since then. Most protests occur at night when groups of young demonstrators gather in front of the Parliament and block Rustaveli Avenue.

All cafes, restaurants, galleries, and museums on Rustaveli Avenue are open, and there is no danger in visiting them during the daytime. Georgian protesters are peaceful; there is no violence or vandalism as might occur in some countries during political unrest.

As a visitor, the primary safety consideration is to avoid the protest areas at night. Specifically, it’s advisable not to walk down Rustaveli Avenue near Parliament after dark.

Georgia is one of the few former Soviet countries that has enacted comprehensive anti-discrimination laws, including those against hate speech and hate crimes related to sexual orientation, as well as laws addressing discrimination based on gender identity. However, Georgia is not widely regarded as a particularly gay-friendly destination. This perception is largely due to the strong influence of the conservative Orthodox Church throughout the country.

Attitudes toward the 2SLGBTQI+ community can vary significantly in Georgia, and identifying as 2SLGBTQI+ does not necessarily mean that tourists will encounter problems.
Easter, called “Agdgoma” in Georgia, has movable dates since it follows the Julian calendar and can fall anytime between April 4 and May 8. The exact date is typically calculated based on the spring equinox. In Georgia, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Jewish celebration of Passover. Because of this, Orthodox Easter is usually celebrated a week or two later than most Christians in the Western world.

Good news: Catholic and Orthodox Easter are celebrated this year on the same date – the 20th of April.

Religious individuals begin their preparations with a 40-day fast. Georgia is considered a paradise for vegans and vegetarians because, during this fasting period, people avoid all food containing animal ingredients. Everything consumed must be “samarkhvo,” which refers to food suitable for fasting. One might think that fasting food cannot be delicious, but some of the most delicious Georgian dishes are from the samarkhvo menu.

Good Friday, or as we call it, Red Friday, is the day when Georgian families get together to dye eggs at home in the kitchen. This must be done before sunset. We do not use artificial colours but rely on natural remedies. The most popular options are red onion peels and madder roots. The deeper the red, the better, as the red represents Christ’s blood. Some people use coriander or young walnut leaves to create patterns on the red eggs. The red-dyed eggs are placed in blades of grass and used as decorations during Easter week, symbolizing the new life that Christ gave to humanity after his resurrection.

One of the greatest joys for children, and not just for them, is cracking red eggs. The competition begins on Easter Sunday morning. The person whose Easter egg cracks all the others and lasts the longest is declared the winner.

One of the most challenging and essential tasks for every Georgian host is to bake or purchase the right Easter cake—its majestic Paska. This traditional Easter dessert is a must-have, and there is an unofficial annual competition to earn a reputation for having the most delicious Easter cake.

What is the secret to the perfect Georgian Easter cake? It should be dense and moist, moderately fatty, moderately sweet, and, most importantly, have a well-balanced flavour of nutmeg, clove, saffron, and cinnamon. This cake is made exclusively for Easter, and Georgians eagerly anticipate enjoying it from one Easter to the next.

Easter is a time for Georgians to honour their ancestors and visit their graves. It is important to pay respects to our loved ones who have passed away. Many people return to their hometowns during this significant holiday, where extended families reunite to celebrate together. Every cemetery across the country is filled with visitors; it is not a time for mourning but rather for celebration.

We light candles and roll red eggs on the graves, joyfully congratulating the deceased on the resurrection of Jesus. After sharing toasts to honour those who have passed, it is a cherished tradition to pour wine on the graves. Georgians are expected to be generous, bringing enough wine and Easter cake to the cemetery, as we may have guests.

In small towns and villages, where people are exceptionally close-knit, after visiting the graves of their loved ones, they also take time to show respect for their neighbours’ and friends’ ancestors.

Families gather around a big table filled with delicious food, specially prepared to mark the end of 40 days of fasting and to celebrate the victory of life over death and the renewal of hope for all humanity.

After fasting for 40 days, the list of dishes is very generous. Of all the popular dishes prepared for the holiest of all holidays, Chakapuli is supposedly the most popular. Chakapuli is a meat stew made from lamb or mutton, cooked with fresh plums, tarragon, and various spices. It is a staple dish in Georgian cuisine, so if you have the chance, be sure to try it!

“Lelo Burti” is not just a game; it is a unique sporting event and cultural festival that occurs once a year on Orthodox Easter Sunday. In the past, the winning team was believed to guarantee a better harvest for their village. Today, the game is played to honour those we have lost. After the match, the victors carry the ball to the local cemetery and place it on the grave of someone who passed away the previous year. It’s a beautiful tradition that connects communities and keeps memories alive!

Rtveli, the grape harvest festival, is one of Georgia’s oldest and most authentic celebrations. This festival marks the end of the grape-growing season, during which Georgians honour the harvest and the winemaking process, showing respect for the land and its abundance. With a winemaking tradition that dates back eight thousand years, the country has a profound love for viticulture, making the grape harvest one of the most joyous occasions of the year.

There’s no better way to explore Georgia than with Khinkali, which is one of the most popular dishes in Georgian cuisine and considered to be a national dish.

Khinkali originated from the mountain regions of Pshavi, Mtiuleti, Tusheti, and Khevsureti but it’s now widely consumed throughout the country. They’re a popular Georgian comfort food and often served towards the end of feast “Supra”.

Khinkali refers to Georgian meat-filled soup dumplings made with knobs of dough filled with a mixture of pork and beef (or lamb). They can be made with other fillings as well like vegetables, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and cheese, but the most common versions are stuffed with spiced ground meat.

To eat, the dumpling is sprinkled with black pepper and then picked up by its stem by hand. The diner takes a small bite from the side of the top to suck out the hot broth before digging into the filling.
